Tuesday, December 25, 2007 10:34 AM CST Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas!! We hope Santa made it to all the homes across the world. He certainly made it here yet no one is up yet but Camie and myself. She is so much a replicate of me when I was 13. It is predicted that Seattle will get snow today. That would fun to see snow falling on Christmas. Yesterday was a lovely Christmas Eve. Marin started her day with a visit to the ear doc. We found this wonderful ENT who is finally, after years, being able to seemingly clear up Marin's ears, or at least improve them. We haven't mentioned the ear thing too much because there is so many other things going on but Marin suffers from cronic swimmer's ear. Dr. Lee sucked all kinds of "gunk" from her ear and has her on three different kinds of drops as well as an oral pill. Marin's hearing is restoring at almost 100%. Up until this point, we had thought that some of the hearing loss was due to radiation, which is a common side effect. Dr. Lee's father had a "very bad" brain tumor with two of the three types of cancer 15 years ago, and he is still alive today. It's wonderful to hear stories like this giving us our forever undying hope. From the ear doc's office Marin went to the Bellevue Club to swim. She is looking really good in the water and, as always, loves it. During all of her practices, she takes breaks and "plays" in the water pretending she is a dolphin, etc. You know someone really loves something when they do it everyday, for hours, and still looks at it as fun and play! We went to Christmas Eve service at 5:00p.m. and it was wonderful. Lots of Christmas carols were sang, and just the whole message of the season was felt. Our Preacher, Gary Gonzoles, told a wonderful story that I would like to share. "A young boy was in Sunday school class making a little manger for their craft. As the teacher was going around checking everyone's manger, "Tommy" had two babies in his manger. The teacher asked him if he knew the story of Jesus. Tommy said, "of course!" He started to tell the story of Jesus and told it perfectly until the part when everyone started to come and see Jesus. Tommy then said, "when he first say Jesus he felt lonely, cold, and had nothing to bring Jesus. Jesus told him that he could crawl into the manger with him and they could keep eachother warm and that Jesus would help him to never be lonely. Tommy crawled into the manger and has been lying right by Jesus ever since." That's the way we should all feel on this day. We just took a little break because everyone was up. We have opened all our gifts and everyone is thrilled. We are now having a wonderful breakfast and getting ready to go to So. Cal to visit my (Nancy's) side of the family. More festivities await us this evening. Here's hoping all you find peace, love, and joy today, and from this day forward. As I must remember, we should never feel alone or afraid. Life is a precious gift and we should cherish everyday. Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas!! And of course, anyone who doesn't celebrate christmas, may the belief you have bring you much joy today!!
A big Hug, the morrisons Marin and gang (Nancy, Matt, Camie, and Spydey)
As we move forward toward 2008, here is a quote for all of us: "The potential of the average person is like a huge ocean unsailed, a new continent unexplored, a world of possibilities waiting to be released and channeled toward some great good."
Saturday, December 22, 2007 12:52 AM CST Marin underwent an MRI yesterday and we looked over the images with Dr. Geyer. There was an area of concern, but we're hoping this is a residual result of the gamma knife radiation. We won't have a consensus opinion on this latest MRI until the middle of next week (after Christmas) when the tumor board meets ro review her case. Again, we're hopeful that what looks like a 'hot' spot is radiated tissue, but we're cautious. It's always very alarming when we're seeing differences that are un explainable.
Thank you to all who've sent well-wishes and prayers. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend.
Love, Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Friday, December 21, 2007 2:02 AM CST We're heading in to the holiday weekend asking to add a little extra prayer for Marin today. This morning she's undergoing an MRI to assess the status of her tumor. It's a regularly scheduled exam, so this is nothing of an emergency nature, but we're always a little on edge during this process. Marin has been feeling well and working out in the pool as well as doing her therapy, so we have faith that things are progressing in a positive direction.
It's been a nice week as Marin has been able to reconnect with some friends who are home from college in the last several days. She's enjoyed some time with Molly and with Ashley, and this type of intreaction with friends really gives her a lift. Her swimming is going well as we begin to plan a strategy to prepare her for the Paralympic trials coming the first week of April. We have several people who want to help and we'll be doing our best to help her get prepared. Thanks to all who are backing her with positive thoughts and prayers. We'll let you know how the MRI goes later today.
Merry Christmas,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camie & Michael
Friday, December 7, 2007 8:57 PM CST Friday was a really good day for Marin at the U.S. Paralympics Open Championships. Once again, she only swam in one event, the 50m-freestyle, but today she shaved time off her personal best in both sessions. In the morning, she clocked in at 49.5 seconds for the free, which she swims on her back. In the finals this evening, she lowered that time to 48.0, which is a great mark for several reasons. First, it's a good time and it made Marin feel really good to have two fine races. Second, it shows she can go under :49 for the 50m-backstroke, which she was unable to do on Thursday. This really boosts her confidence. If she can make that mark in the 50-back, she qualifies for the U.S. elite team.
Marin was helped by some good advice from our old friend and one of her favorite coaches of all time, Chris Oliver who she swam with for the Bolles Sharks in Jacksonville. Chris is working with one of the elite athletes from Gainesville and we're becoming friends with Miranda Uhl who's having quite a meet herself.
This evening we drove down to the heart of Washington, D.C. to see the National Christmas tree and the White House. We strolled in front of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., hung out with some national security cops, took some pictures and then drove back. We're all pooped out and going to bed anticipating another big day with Marin swimming the 100m freestyle.
Thanks for checking in!
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn, & Michael
Thursday, December 6, 2007 8:45 PM CST Thursday was a fun and exciting day at the U.S. Paralympics Open Championships for Marin and several of her swim friends. Marin swam in one event, the 50-meter backstroke, and qualified for the finals second in her class to a swimmer from Spain. Her time was close but not quite as fast as her personal best. In the finals this evening, she swam second again, and her time was a little slower. She went 50.88 in the morning, then 51.35 in the evening. She felt good but a little disappointed that she didn't improve her time. As always, we are very proud of her and she has two more races this weekend.
In the meantime, Marin's having a great time visiting with her friends from all the different swim teams around the country. The more of these meets she goes to, the more she bonds with the competitors, who become familiar, and them become friends. It's quite a unique clique, these paralympic athletes, and everyone is so supportive.
On the home front, Michael and Camie are enjoying their time with Gram and Grumpy this week, with Mike having lots of fun and Camie holding things together as usual. We're all very excited for her soccer team 'The Kickers' who are playing for the state championship Saturday in Olympia. It's been a great season with a wonderful group of girls, amazing coaches, and terrific parents and families in support. We're all pulling hard for 'The Kickers' this Saturday.
We'll update Marin's events tomorrow. Have a great Friday!

Wednesday, December 5, 2007 11:08 PM CST Hello from snowy Maryland!
Marin and Nancy flew in to Baltimore Tuesday night and drove to College Park, where Marin swims in the U.S. Paralympics Open Championships Thursday through Saturday. There's top competition from all over the world here, including Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Mexican athletes that Marin will likely see again if she makes it all the way to Beijing next year.
After waking up to a blanket of snow, the girls went to the U. of Maryland first thing where Matt met them later in the morning. The first order of business was to go through the classification process with a panel of international qualifiers. There's always a little apprehension to this process because it can be subjective and it can have a profound affect on a disabled athletes career if she's placed in a classification beyond her abilities. Marin, however, was judged to be an S-5 level athlete, just as she was in the spring, so all worked out fine for her. The process, though, was rough on her as she was pulled, pushed and prodded for the better part of an hour, and she felt some pain along the way, and later when she was done swimming. She went through a light workout with Kiko to get used to the pool and she complained about the cold... typical.
All the exertion after the travel proved to be a problem as Marin was sick to her stomach in the locker room. She felt better fairly quickly, and after a big lunch, she took a good nap. Lots of carbs for dinner, then a good night's sleep, and she's ready for her 50-backstroke tomorrow. This is her big event, as she already holds the American record in her class and is just a fraction of a second from reaching the standard for the elite national team. Send up some good prayers for her tonight & tomorrow; it's the first event of the meet and we'll keep you posted on how it goes. With good luck, she'll get two cracks at it tomorrow, in the prelims in the morning and in the finals in the evening. Have a great day and we'll let you know the results. Cammie and Michael are home with Gramma Sharon & Grumpy this week. That's another adventure we'll get to later.
Good times,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn, Michael, Gram & Grumpy
Saturday, December 1, 2007 2:04 PM CST Hi all,
Marin's in the home stretch toward the U.S. Paralympics Swimming Open next week in College Park, MD. She's been working hard with coach Karen at the BCC during the week and every other weekend with coach Kiko. Her weekly routine of school and therapy fills her time beyond swimming and it's often exhausting.
We're looking forward to the competition and since it's her first in quite a while there's some apprehension. Marin admits to being nervous going in, which is a good thing, we think, because she tends to swim well when she has the right level of nerves going. We're really looking forward to it.
A very nice gesture was extended by her teacher Ashley this week when she asked Marin to be in her wedding. This really made her feel wonderful and we're looking forward to the wonderful event next summer. We hope all are having a terrific weekend. We're all extremely busy with basketball, soccer, and swimming going on. Plus we're getting the first snow of the winter here in the Northwest... oh, well, we'll have to go skiing!
Have a great day,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Micheal
Thursday, November 22, 2007 4:32 AM CST Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
It's been an eventful week already and we're looking forward to a great holiday together and a fun weekend. For starters, both Camie and Michael brought home terrific report cards this week and we have give them their props. Camie in particular has been such a good student and all her teacher comments about her character make us so very proud. Michael received top marks as well and there's no doubt his sister's example of good study is rubbing off. Marin, too has been a terrific example of fortitude in her school work as she continues to study with Ashley and she never allows her difficulties to discourage her.
On Sunday night Marin was photographed at the Bellevue Club by a local photographer Christopher Watkins who does amazing work with portraits and action shots. He's been doing a series about athletes and he wanted to include Marin. We were very honored that he had heard of her story and wanted to use his artistry to help tell it. We haven't seen the photos yet, but we will share them when we can.
We're looking forward to being together this weekend and sharing some time with friends. We have to also shout out to Camie's soccer team, The Kickers, who won their regional championship and will now take part in the state tournament in Olympia in a couple weeks. What a great team of girls, with great caoches and a great bunch of parents in support. It's been a wonderful season and we feel fortunate that we've been able to be involved.
As always, we are touched by the notes sent by family and friends near and far and please know that we are thinking of you all at this time of year.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael.
Sunday, November 18, 2007 12:56 AM CST We had a nice week and Marin enjoyed her Eastlake HS swim banquet where she was touched to be named the team's most inspirational swimmer. Her coach Andy Hay gave an emotional presentation at it was really nice, with more than a few tears in the house. For Marin, it's been a wonderful experience to swim with the HS team and although she isn't able to be as social as she wants to be, she really enjoys the contact with the other girls on the team. On Friday, her teammate and friend Kelsey picked her up and took her to the school play for a nice evening out that Marin really enjoyed.
We're looking forward to Thanksgiving this week and thinking of family and friends far away as the holiday season gets underway. We hope you all have a wonderful time and consider all our blessings.
Have a great Sunday,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Tuesday, November 13, 2007 5:50 PM CST We enjoyed a nice weekend, and as much as I'd like to say 'relaxing', it was more go, go, go... Marin's swimming continues to go well, Michael's playing basketball and Camie's soccer team is in the playoffs, so needless to say, we've been busy.
We haven't overlooked Veteran's Day and our thoughts and prayers have been with those that served our country, including our uncle John McIntyre who gave his life in the final days of World War II. Thanks to a compilation of news articles and official government correspondence saved by our Aunt Dee, Michael was able to tell a little bit of his story as part of a class project to commemorate the holiday. Probably a little over the heads of the kindergarten class, but the sentiment was nice and Michael now has an idea about the history of his family.
We took some time to go to the movies on Sunday and enjoyed "Fred Clause", while Camie & Mike really liked "Bee Movie". After that, we went to a cool presentation at church called 'F/X' The Family Experience. It was a nice way to spend time together. We hope you all had as good a holiday weekend as we had and enjoy a great week ahead.
Always strokin'
Marin & Nancy, Matt, camlyn & Michael
Friday, November 9, 2007 11:28 AM CST Thanks for all the wonderful moral support in the wake of Marin's good news. It's great to read all the entries from friends and family, especially when we've been out of touch for a while. It inspires us when we realize how much everyone cares and how Marin has touched so many people.
This week has been a back to routine normal existence without as much medical anxiety hanging over our heads. Marin is settling in to a swimming routine where she's working out mostly at mid-day with coach Karen at the BC. She's also working with coach Kiko and the Seals a couple times a month getting ready for some big meets ahead. Her high school season is complete, although she will be competing in the State meet when the boys swim in February. Each year in Washington, they alternate the disability portion of the meet between the girls meet in the fall and the boy's meet in winter. It'll be a nice incentive for her when she's going through the winter work-out blah's.
In the meantime, she's focusing on the upcoming meet next month in Maryland. This one is the last big international competition before the Paralympic Trials next spring. Some of the top disability swimmers in the world will be at the meet and it will be a great measure of Marin's standing against some of the best competition in the world. Already, according to the psyche sheets, she's among the top 2 or 3 in her classification in each of her events. It's very exciting. Marin's been through a lot in the last few months; the gamma knife radiation was effective on the tumor but there's also been a residual in fatigue. Still, she keeps stroking, through school, therapy and workouts and she continues to shine with such a great attitude. We are so proud of her, as we are of Camie and Michael too, who have been terrific while living with the distractions and general stress of our circumstances. All through it, we feel very fortunate. Marin is enjoying good days and we're very thankful for that. Thanks for supporting us.
Have a great weekend,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Saturday, November 3, 2007 11:13 AM CDT We are so happy today to report that Marin's MRI yesterday showed very encouraging signs. The nodules of growth that appeared so alarming the last time now show distinct evidence that the gamma knife radiation is doing what we hoped. The areas that looked 'hot' before now look burnt and the remaining lining around the areas look to be smaller. It's really wonderful news and we are greatly relieved after our consultation with Dr. Geyer. At the same time, we're taking all the caution not to let up on the fight as this only means there's no visible signs of tumor growth; we'll continue to proceed with good faith and a positive approach, but we know that the cancer is not gone. Our sincere thanks to all of you who read this, pray for Marin, write here and are concerned for our family. We hope you have as wonderful a weekend as we are.
Happy Day!
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Thursday, November 1, 2007 12:48 AM CDT Thank you all so much for the well wishes and extra prayers, and now we're asking to keep that coming for another 24 hours. Earlier this week I mistakenly wrote 'Thursday' as the day... oops, my bad.. the MRI is actually on Friday. So we're still in the anxious anticipation mode for another day and we appreciate all of your concerns.
In the meantime, life is always worth living well and we've enjoyed a fun week. Halloween last night was a great time with friends around the neighborhood, beginning with a pizza party for the trick-or-treaters, then the annual candy harvest conducted at top-speed. Having a 5-year old helps us all relive the glory years and Michael was as excited as a boy could be. This year, he introduced a new twist on his favorite costume; he went as the Black Spiderman! That's Spidey after he was infected by the alien tar from outerspace. Anyway, Mikey was thrilled with his costume, which was acquired by our friend Donna who came through big when we were having a tough time finding it in his size. Thank you Donna! Camie had a great time going around with her friends in the neighborhood, while Marin patrolled the front porch passing out the treats to children. Nancy must have done an incredible job, because she prepared over 100 goody bags and they were gone long before the Great Pumpkin showed up.
Marin has had a good week working out in the pool and studying her lessons. We were thrilled with the news on Monday that Marin's teacher Ashley is now betrothed!! Her best man Fred popped the question over the weekend and Ashley said, "Umm... okay". Good times and a big congratulations to Ashley & Fred; we're looking forward to her wedding next summer.
Again, we're heading in for the MRI Friday and we'll keep you posted with the latest information. Thanks for keeping Marin in your thoughts and prayers.
Happy All Saints Day!
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Monday, October 29, 2007 8:15 AM CDT With apologies for the delinquent entries this week; we've had real problems getting our computer working and now it's back up & running. Our freind and neighbor Hugh spent hours with us over the weekend cleaning out viruses and we are fantasticly in debted to his generosity and know how. Thanks Hugh!
We had a nice weekend with the whole family hanging around, carving pumpkins, playing games, and enjoying some terrific weather here in the northwest. The colors have been popping this week and it really is something to see. Friday we all went swimming at the Bellevue club as Marin did her daily workout. It's really beautiful to watch her move through her strokes so gracefully, back and forth, and you know that physically it's the most peaceful time of her day.
This week we're asking for a little extra prayer as she'll be going in for an MRI on Thursday morning. This will be the first look since the post-gamma knife pictures looked somewhat alarming. At the time, about six weeks ago, the consensus among the brain tumor board was that the areas that looked active were the parts that were radiated, so it would not necessarily be bad that they looked a little swollen. This time around should give us a better idea how effective the gamma knofe was and then what we should be thinking about doing next. Obviously we're a little anxious, but Marin continues to be in good spirits and is enjoying good days. Thanks for all your emotional & prayer support.
Have a great Monday,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Saturday, October 20, 2007 8:58 AM CDT Friday Marin swam in her final high school head to head meet for the season and it was a little emotional for her. She performed well, her times were on her marks, but she's a little sad she won't be seeing the team as much anymore. It takes some time for Marin to get to know people (and for them to know her), and I think she was just starting to get closer to some of the other girls. Nevertheless, she's had a great time swimming on the team again this season and there will be a banquet and such coming up, so she's looking forward to that. There is one more meet for her too as she'll be able to swim in the disabled events at the Washington HS State meet in a few weeks. She's looking forward to that meet again this year.
Also today is another occasion for a little emotion as Marin's friends from the hospital in GA are having a 'rehab reunion' back at Scottish Rite Hospital. Marin worked, struggled, and survived with a host of other patients and made a few very close friends, including her pal Stephanie who stays in touch all the time. Marin is sorry she won't be able to make it to the reunion but she's thinking of her friends on this day. Thanks as always for the kind notes and the prayers.
Have a great weekend,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Sunday, October 14, 2007 11:40 AM CDT It's been a relaxing weekend coming off a strong performance for Marin in her high school meet Friday night. Swimming a leg of her team's medley relay, she clocked 44 seconds in the 50 yard backstroke, which indicates she's keeping up a good pace and she clocked about the same when she swam the 50 yard free (on her back) starting from the blocks. Marin's excited to see her old pal Naomi as they got together this weekend for the first time since Naomi moved away over the summer.
More accolades for Camie this week as she was named one of her school's "Students of the Month". A handful of students from each grade win the honor after getting nominated by their teachers. A great way to start the school year, Way to GO Cammie!
This week we're keeping our Uncle Bruce Pfister in our prayers and please remember him in yours as well. He'll be undergoing treatment for prostate cancer this week and he needs our support. Aunt Jeannie and Ben too, although I can't think of a better role model in the fight against cancer than our Aunt jeannie. She has had such a positive attitude through two bouts of her own, and she's been wonderfully supportive of Marin for more than two years. We love you and you're all in our prayers.
Stay strong,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Thursday, October 11, 2007 10:47 AM CDT It's always so nice to read notes from first-time writers in Marin's guestbook, many of whom say they've followed her story for a long time, and hearing from friends for the first time in a while. Reading the entries always gives us a lift.
We had more than a few people inquire about the event in December so here's the info. Marin will participate in the U.S. Paralympics Open Swimming Championships in College Park, Maryland from December 6-8, and you can read more at: http://www.usoc.org/paralympics/swimming_teams.html
We'll arrive the evening of the 4th and stay until the 9th. A number of swim friends are from the area and have mentioned the pool at the U. of Maryland is really fast! Our Olympic friends Mark Henderson (the new dad) and Bruce Schumacher are both from the area, as is Marin's high school coach Andy Hay. A number of current swimming stars live and work-out near here including Jessica Long from the Paralympic team.
For now, Marin is focused on her workouts and enjoying the Eastlake High team. She's swimming in a meet Friday evening where she'll enter the 100-IM for the first time since she returned to the pool. She's nervous about the competition, especially because she doesn't think she does the breast stroke very well, but coach Andy is confident she can pull it off. It's good that she continues to be challenged in different events. We hope all of you are dealing well with your challenges too.
Still feeling good and swimming strong,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Cammie & Michael
Monday, October 8, 2007 7:30 AM CDT Good morning. It's monday and time to get back to the drawing board. As probably every mother out there, I have been up half the night worrying about various things I need to do this week for Marin. The school issues still remain very much unresolved. They routinely send us "dear John" letters, occationally call, but don't seem to be able to follow-through with the services she is entitled to and needs.
We have had a few nice and relaxing days over the weekend. Last Thursday was busy with therapy, school with Ashley, and Eastlake swim practice. They had a meet on Friday but Marin did not participate in this one. A friend of ours, Delann Elliott, lost her husband 7 years ago to brain cancer and started a Fund to raise money for research. She has an annual golf-auction day which Marin and I attended the dinner. It was very encouraging to hear a Doctor talk from the Dana-Farber Cancer Research Center regarding all the new trials that are beinging for brain cancer. Marin's type may not be able to benefit, but it's wonderful to see things happening in the brain tumor world.
As far as Marin's tumor, we are waiting once again for an MRI in about 2 weeks to see if we can see how the Gamma Knife is working and make sure nothing else is festering in there.
Saturday Marin enjoyed staying home watching a movie, working on scrap-booking and looking a photos, and spending time with our little spidey, Michael. Now that he's in school, Marin isn't being able to spend all the time she had before with him. He is still so adorable with Marin and brings her such joy. His new activity is trying to knock Marin down. It's great therapy for her also.
Sunday we went to swim with Kiko, the paralympic coach here in Seattle. Marin really enjoys this time she has with her.
Another concern with dear old mom here is Marin getting some new friends. She had a few girls whom had become good friends with her, two went to college, and one moved to California. I hope and pray that someone steps up and recognizes that Marin needs a friend. Since those in Seattle didn't know Marin "before," I can see it being hard to step out of a certain comfort zone to become her friend. Even someone to go to the movies with her occationally would be nice. Please pray with me that this can happen for her so her social life can be a little more fulfilling. I know I'm a great mom but she gets sick of hanging out with me!
Marin continues to be so happy. A few days ago she was discussing her various things that have happened to her. She made the conclusion that if anything on her body didn't work at all, she thinks the arm is a good choice (like it was a choice!). She said it's wonderful that she can walk, and still have one arm to do so many things with. It's quite impressive watching her do most everything people with two hands do. Zipping her coat, tying her shoes, eating, etc. I still have a hard time with the physical hardships she has encountered yet her strength holds me up. I'm sure her strength is helping hold a lot of you up as well.
Thank you soo much for supporting our family, holding us up in prayer, and following Marin's path with her. We are so thanking we have this site to lift her up with kind words and truely wonderful friends all over the world. I think she really content with this.
Have a wonderful week and I will check in tomorrow.
A big hug, Marin and Nancy Matt, Camlyn, and Michael too!
Wednesday, October 3, 2007 0:30 AM CDT Hi All,
We can't tell you how wonderful it is to check in each day and read all the wonderful messages from family and friends, far and near. It always lifts us when we know so many of you are out there thinking of us regularly. Marin is really enjoying reading her messages and she's doing better and better at trying to respond to some on her own. She's working with Ashley to try to get her e-mail skills together so she can communicate with her friends more regularly. So far it's slow, she responds to one or two a week, she's very courageous in her effort and she's gaining confidence as she goes. Just this week she exchanged e-mails with an old friend Evan from Collins Hill, then muscled up enough courage to make a phone call and say hello. It was big for Marin and she was very happy after speaking to Evan on the phone. This week in the pool, Marin continues to show strong improvement with her new technique. In her high school meet last Friday, she lopped two seconds of her time in the 100 backstroke, then again today (Tuesday), she took two more seconds off in the same event. We're very excited to see how she'll do in her last big paralympic meet for this year, that's coming up in December in College Park, Maryland. She's very inspired and training hard for this event.
We're still having a little trouble getting school serviced on-board this year as the schedules for teachers and therapists have not been connecting very well and as a result, Marin's been missing out on several hours of important work each week. The struggle is never-ending and Nancy is doing her best to advocate for Marin each day. We're all working hard and we appreciate your love and support.
Happy October,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Monday, September 24, 2007 9:19 AM CDT Marin had a pretty exciting performance in Friday's High School meet for Eastlake. She had been working on some new techniques for her backstroke and when she put that to the test in a race, the results were terrific. Swimming in the JV 100-yard backstroke, she took about 8 seconds off the time she had a week earlier, and she finished second out of three competitors in her heat (it's always impressive to see her place ahead of an able-bodied swimmer). We were all very proud of her, and deep down she was happy too, but she still has that sense that she should be as fast as she once was in the pool, so she takes these accomplishments with a bit of a sideways smile. She also swam in a relay race and again showed well and just being part of the team and getting in to it with the other girls is really good for her.
On the health front, we're still in a wait and see situation. Still a bit nervous about what might be going on in her head, but we have to allow the radiation to have it's affect, so until we take another MRI in a few weeks we're asking for prayers that her cancer is being defeated. Marin is feeling good and looking good and all the outward signs are positive. Thanks to all for your support in spirit.
A special high-five to Cammie this week as she came home with a note saying she's qualified for the National Honor Society for her classroom performance at school. Through all the stress and difficulties we've been through as a family, Cammie has never let us down and she continues to excel at everything she tries. She's a great child and we're so wonderfully proud of her.
Have a great week,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Tuesday, September 18, 2007 8:59 AM CDT We've had a little more comforting opinion on Marin's MRI reading when we were able to speak to the attending radio-surgeon who performed the gamma knife proceedure. After he took a look at the results, he noted that he expected to see the swelling that we did and that is likely a typical reaction to the radiation. All three areas where we saw increased growth or swelling were the areas that he targeted and that is the type of swelling that should be expected within a month or 6 weeks of the gamma knife. This still doesn't mean that growth hasn't occurred, but it gives us hope that perhaps it hasn't and we'll continue to watch closely for further developments as we consider the next option.
In the meantime, Marin continues to smile happily throughout her day. On Friday, she competed with her Eastlake swim team for the first time this season. She had fun swimming the 100 backstroke and a leg of the 400 free relay. It was a good time being with the team and although she was not thrilled with her performance, but she certainly was inspiring to a lot of people at the pool and several people made a point of telling her so.
On Sunday we had a very special afternoon when Marin met Brad Schumaker at a local pool for a couple hours of one on one swim instruction. Brad is a former U.S. team freestyle sprinter who won a gold medal at the '96 games in Atlanta, and then earned a spot on the U.S. water polo team for the 2000 games in Sidney. His clinic lesson was donated as an auction item for a Microsoft company charity event and was claimed by our friends and neighbors Jeff and Janet and they graciously presented this to Marin. So we all went to the pool Sunday where Brad & his brother hosted us for a couple hours. It was clear that Brad was well prepared to help Marin with her approach to competition and after speaking about the mental aspects for a while, they hit the pool for some specific stroke instruction. Brad was very astute in helping Marin fine-tune her backstroke, butterfly and dolphin kick. He was very friendly and fun and we all enjoyed the experience. He also showed us his gold medal and allowed Marin to wear it around her neck to get a mental template for her success next year. It was a really good time, Jeff & Janet came along and seemed to enjoy it too, and we are very grateful for their generosity.
Marin received some nice mail this week including a note and a check from her friends at Collins Hill High in Georgia. It was very nice for her to get this gift and know that all her friends back in GA are always in her corner. The Wave of Courage Foundation also came through with a sizeable donation that's going to be a big help this month and next as we take in some big expenses, so thank you very much Wave of Courage!
We're looking forward to another good week,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Micheal.
Thursday, September 13, 2007 11:31 PM CDT It's taken us a few days to sort out the results of Marin's MRI on Tuesday, so thanks for being patient with our updates. The MRI was taken Tuesday afternoon and we waited until Dr. Geyer met with the tumor board on Wenesday to take a full consultation on the latest pictures. We were alarmed to see that the areas that had been zapped with the Gamma knife last month looked prominent and seemed to be growing and there was a third spot that appeared to be new in the area between the other two. Indeed this is alarming, but at the same time it may be too early to tell just what the affect of the radiation really is or what it will be. After looking at the results and discussing it with the other doctors on the tumor board, Dr. Geyer relieved our fears a little by explaining that the swelling of the areas that were radiated is common and that the third area was also a targeted radiation spot so the swelling could simply be the affect of the radiation on these areas and hopefully they recede. Of course we will continue to proceed as if the worst-case scenario is in affect, so we're exploring the chemotherapy options while we wait a little longer. We're encouraged knowing that there are treatments available that we know can be affective and that there are some new clinical trial drugs that are promising as well. We feel we have good options when the time comes to do more chemo. In the meantime, Marin continues to do great.
On Sunday, we visited the home/studio of our friend Lynnette Johnson who operates Soulimanation, a foundation for families touched by the illness of a child (check out http://soulumination.org/inkind.html). Lynette took the photos of Marin seen here on this website; she was the subject of a recent award-winning documentary and she had a viewing/fund raiser at her home. It was nice to visit with her and others we're acquainted with through her work, including Deb & Char Eberhardt (Marin's friend Molly's parents) who actually volunteered to help operate the event. Marin felt special as she was featured in a poster with UW hot-shot quarterback Jake Locker that Lynette photographed as part of a fundraiser. We all enjoyed the afternoon.
Marin received a nice surprise in the mail today when she opened up a package from the US Paralympic team. She was presented with lots of team clothing, from pull-over sweat shirts and sweat pants, to work-out shirts, shorts and hats. All cool stuff with team USA logos and everything. It's really neat and we were all thrilled for Marin.
On the school front, she's been working with her teacher Ashley on using the computer more and Marin's really starting to enjoy doing more for herself with the keyboard. Today they wrote to Marin's friend Ashley who's in college at Columbia and she was very proud to get the e-mail going. Please don't stop writing here on her guestbook, but if you'd like to write directly to her you can now at:
supermarin90@hotmail.com
Also from old friends, Marin received an uplifting card from her good pal from SwimAtlanta Sarah Looney who'd now a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh and from our cousin Jim McIntyre in Ann Arbor, a nice note with a gift of a signed swim cap of Michael Phelps! How cool is that! She still totally digs Aaron Piersol, but Phelps is no slouch. And then to top it off, earlier today she received a phone call from her rehab pal Stephanie who continues to move forward with her life in Georgia and the two had a nice chat on the phone. Good friends is what life is all about.
Enjoy the rest of your week,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Tuesday, September 11, 2007 9:43 AM CDT Settling in to a back-to-school routine here is anything but routine. Marin's therapy schedule and swimming workouts are all over the map and Cammie and Michael's activities are demanding more and more attention as well, but so far we're managing to hold it together. I know, everyone's going through it this time of year.
Today we're calling for a little extra prayer as Marin is going in for her follow up MRI after the gamma knife treatment a month ago. We're not expecting to see any dramatic change but we're certainly praying we don't get any further surprises. After the MRI, we'll consult with Dr. Geyer about what we might consider next. It may still be a wait and see situation and we'll continue forward.
For her part, Marin is feeling good and looking great. Her beautiful smile is as dependable as an oak tree and she never fails to brighten our day. She's been working hard with her Eastlake High team and is disappointed she'll miss a swim meet this afternoon due to the doctor's appointment. We wish the wolves good luck and she'll be back in the pool tomorrow.
Have a great day,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn, & Mikey
*We remember 9/11/2001 and honor all those who lost their lives in NYC six years ago today.
Saturday, September 8, 2007 11:16 AM CDT Wow! The Brewster's ice cream social just seemed amazing. I can even tell everyone how touched Marin continues to be at kind acts such as this. She would love, love, love, to be able to come down the Atlanta and visit everyone. I'll have to work on that.
School started this week for the Morrison household. Michael attended his first day of Kindergarden. He informed me that he has been "waiting his whole life for this moment." When we lived in Atlanta, the big, yellow bus stopped right in front of our house. Here in Seattle, the big yellow also stops right in front of our house. For five years, he has been watching children getting off and on but only dreaming of the day that he would. Well, that day came and his smile couln't have been any bigger and more joyous. He seemed to do fine in the classroom as well although I really could'nt get mich information from him.
Cami is in 8th grade and enjoying everything about it. She is such a happy and positive person. Her presence makes everyone around her feel good and I am so blessed to have a 13 year old who acts so wonderfully. She is going to start taking numerous dance classes next week and is very excited about that.
Marin's school, although she's not attendind classes at school, has started off well. She continues to get tutoring from Ashley who is so wonderful for Marin. We aren't seening her as much as we got to last year due to Marin's swim schedule and Ashley taking on some extra school things. We have another teacher, Shelly, whom is filling in some of the time so Marin can get as many hours as possible. Shelly is a wonderful lady as well. Marin also is swimming on the Eastlake High School swim team. This year she is riding with a young lady named Kelsey who also swims on the team. It's wonderful since both her and I get about 3 hours away from eachother. Not that she doesn't love me dearly, but, I am her Mom and she is 17!! Also, that allows me to be able to get Michael off the bus when he gets home from school.
We are having difficulty with Marin's therapy situation which hopefully I can come up with a better solution. The insurance cut us off from having the therapist come to our home. We now have to travel to various places for Marin to get therapy. For instance, this friday she had an ocupational therapy session. It was one hour and it took 3 1/2 hours due to travel time, parking, walking to the building. Marin was completely wipped out after that. We are supposed to be able to do this 4 - 6 times per week. NO WAY! It is exhausing for Marin to have to get ready, get in and out of the car, and waste all that time. Instead of getting to spend that time sleeping, she's sitting in the car. This is turn, will affect her swimming. You can't swim good if you're exhausted. She's also not getting any nap time built into the day. Friday she was so tired that she came home and went to bed at 5:00. Hopefully I can fix this situation some how.
The weather is beautiful and sunny today. Cami is playing at a soccer game right now. Marin and I are reading all your lovely entries and thinking about all our friends.
Happy day, Marin and her gang
Sunday, September 2, 2007 0:27 AM CDT WOW! We want to express our warmest appreciation and deepest gratitude to all our wonderful friends in the Gwinnett County swim community who've continued to support Marin and our family in so many ways, most recently the amazing turnout at the Ice Cream fundraiser through Brewster's. The photo in the guestbook courtesy of our good friends and neighbors Pam & Scott Karlins absolutely brought tears to our eyes. Marin can't believe that everyone still thinks of her so fondly and she was thrilled to see the photo with her name on the marquee. Here's a link to the story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution: http://www.ajc.com/search/content/metro/gwinnett/stories/2007/08/27/morrison0827g.html
The financial support is a big help and more importantly the moral support and prayer support lifts us through each and every day. Thank you so much.
Also this week, another article in the upcoming edition of Splash Magazine highlights an effort by two very kind twin sisters from Bellevue High here in the Northwest who've organized another fund raising event to include swim clubs all across the country.

After arriving home from visiting in SoCal on Thursday evening, Marin has been getting reacquainted with her high school swim teammates. She attended practice Friday and took part in a mock swim meet as all of her teammates are getting ready for the first meet of the season next week. Marin needs to participate in ten consecutive workouts with the team in order to be eligible, so she won't be able to take part in competition until a week later.
September arrived with bright sunshine and blue skies, a hopeful omen for the onset of an Indian Summer. Taking advantage of the nice weather, Marin joined her teammates and some of the parents on Saturday morning for a shift at the team's fund-raiser car wash in Sammamish, and we thank everyone in the area who stopped in to have their cars spiffed-up by the Eastlake Wolves swim team. Marin enjoyed being with the girls and held her own as the premier one-handed car washer in town. Later that afternoon, the team bonding continued with a cookout at a local lake and again, Marin enjoyed the company of the girls on the team as she gets to know them better. She truly appreciates these opportunities for social interaction because she gets so little of it compared to other teenagers. It's nice that's she's been accepted so readily by the girls and it's impressive that she's so comfortable with herself despite her speech and mobility issues. It may be hard for her to carry on a conversation, but it's easy to see why people find her so approachable, she's just cool. It's nice to have that kind of support.
Enjoy the remainder of your holiday weekend,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Thursday, August 30, 2007 1:40 AM CDT On the last full day of vacation before traveling Thursday, Marin took full advantage of her cousin's the Cavarnos most excellent backyard pool, getting up early and going through a good strong workout first thing in the morning (and yes, the pool is big enough to effectively swim laps). She was feeling especially dangerous since she did her workout in a bikini, something she would never do with a coach. But this week, she did a great job of working herself out and was wearing out Nancy when they worked together. She's very fired up about returning to practice with coach Karen and also with her high school team on Friday.
After celebrating Gramma Shirley's birthday Tuesday night, all the girls made a day of it together on Wednesday afternoon. Gramma & nancy, Marin, Camie & cousin Katrina all went out for manicures/pedicures and pampered themselves a little. Marin now has bright blue toe nails decorated with flowers. An afternnon nap was followed by more visiting as Nancy's Aunt Donna and cousin Karen came to have dinner with the girls. Karen has been such a nice supporter of Marin and although she lives in Hawaii, she always make an extra effort to visit Marin when she's nearby. Everyone enjoyed dinner out on the town and the partying went late. That's what summer vacation is all about.
Enjoy what's left of August,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Sunday, August 26, 2007 11:37 PM CDT It's been a fun weekend on vacation in SoCal where everyone's had a wonderful time visiting with cousins and such. Friday we all met at Sea World and spent a long day enjoying each others company and getting splashed by whales and nibbled on by dolphins. On Saturday, the gang drove north from Uncle Hal's in OC to camp at Uncle Ron's in Westwood for a couple days. Ron & Teryl's three boys are all 6-under and Michael has a great time with his cousins Landon & Toby. Caleb is 8 mos. old but he goes right along doing all the stuff that the 'big boys' do. And Timmy has been along for the ride as well. Saturday Marin went for a workout at the local YMCA where uncle Ron swims and made some fans among the members there. Then everyone spent the day at the beach and mostly had fun on the Santa Monica Pier where they played games and went on rides and saw where Matt proposed to Nancy 20+ years ago. After a great day at the beach everyone was pooped out so they slept soundly in to Sunday.
Today they spent the afternoon cruising around the UCLA campus where we're hoping Camie is impressed enough to start thinking about her college choice. We have such good memories of our days on campus at Westwood and we're always excited to go back and visit. Of course the visit wouldn't be complete without a stop at the DiDi Rees ice cream shop in Westwood village for the best ice cream sandwiches on the planet. For dinner, the gang jumped the gun on Gramma Shirley's birthday celebration and ate at Acapulco Mexican restaurant where Nancy and I have fond memories as well.
After the chow-down, everyone piled in the cars and drove to Redlands to spend the rest of the trip at the Cavarno's house (best back yard pool ever). Everyone's spending lots of energy but still have plenty of gas left in the tank. Here's to the remainder of summer vacation.
Enjoy,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Friday, August 24, 2007 0:47 AM CDT Having a good time in SoCal this week, but not shirking responsibilities, Marin has started her days with good, strong workouts at the YMCA near uncle Hal's house and Nancy's been joining her as a workout partner. Wenesday, they drove down to San Diego to see our good friends the Christys in Carlesbad. Sheri is Nancy's closest friend from childhood and Mark is one of Matt's best buds growing up and they married after meeting (and making out) at our wedding. It makes for fun double dates at all our high school reunions and cross-checking on old stories about the good 'ol days.
Thursday at was back to OC for sand and surf after the morning in the pool. Camie has been showing off her skills on a surfboard and Mike is all over the boogie board so Marin felt the need to get in on the waves. Maybe not such a good idea. For all her courage and willingness to meet a challenge, the rough surf and rocky beach were a bit too rugged for Marin on this day. She's great once she's all the way in the water, the problem is getting past the waves crashing on the rocky shore. Her crack at boogie boarding ended in a shoreline thrashing; humbling but not hurting, Marin was still smiling despite the failed attempt. Camie came to her aid and of course Michael was full of advice on how to successfully navigate the Pacific on a 2' by 3' shaped piece of sturdy foam. Sunbathing had to be enough for her today, but don't be amazed if she tries to body surf again the next time.
TGIF & enjoy a great weekend,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Wednesday, August 22, 2007 0:56 AM CDT This week started off nicely for Marin as she was reunited with friendly faces from her Eastlake High swim team on the first day of practice Monday. Marin was happy to see her teammates, most of whom she hadn't seen since the end of last season. The wolves have anew coach this year and she's impressed already, although she was sad to learn coach Emily wouldn't return. Marin already did her afternoon workout for the day so she didn't swim with the team and she won't see them again until school starts because she's off for the final vacation of her summer.
Mom, Marin, Camie & Mike left for southern California Tuesday where they'll spend the next ten days enjoying the sun & surf. Marin swam at the local High school in Redlands when they arrived this afternoon, and will continue her workouts through the week. Everyone was thrille to get together with the Cavarno cousins and Marin was especially happy to see her 'twin' cousin Katrina. They gang will also visit Uncle Hal & Aunt JoJo's family down at the beach in Orange County and Uncle Ron & family in Westwood. And of course, they'll hang with Gramma Shirley a lot over the duration of the visit.
Hope all are enjoying you last bit of summer before school,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Saturday, August 18, 2007 12:04 AM CDT I don't know if it was because of yesterday's entry, but Marin's had such a nice response from friends far and near. Many of you have written here in the guestbook and we always appreciat that. At the same time, Marin received a phone call from her great swim pal Jordan in Georgia this morning. She really lit up when she heard her voice on the other end of the line and she's been smiling ever since.
On Friday, Marin enjoyed a nice afternoon with Molly and Ashley when they went out to the movies together. They teamed up to see "Before She Was Jane" about the author Jane Austen, with Anne Hathaway. Marin reports that it was a good film but sad at the end. She admits all three of them teared up a bit at the end (chick flick). It was nice for her to spend time with these two terrific young ladies who are both going off to college back east next week. We will all miss their friendship but look forward to seeing them again when they visit home.
Sadly, we're also saying so long to other important people this week as Marin's in-home therapy is coming to an end. Unfortunately, for insurance reasons, we're running out of coverage for this year and we'll be doing our best the rest of the way. Our excellent OT Beth made her last visit with Marin this morning and she was as sad as we are to see this come to an end. Beth has been an amazing therapist and a great friend and inspiration to Marin. She has always been looking forward to the next innovation that can help Marin with her daily routine. She has brought in a number of kitchen utensils that Marin is able to use and she was the impetus for the Saebo Flex apparatus that Marin uses to work her afflicted right hand. Beth, Jessie, Sue, Andrea and so many others have helped Marin take such great strides forward and they've come to be good friends.
We're always thinking of friends far and near and we look forward to hearing from you anytime.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Mike
Friday, August 17, 2007 5:43 AM CDT Back in the pool and swimming strong this week, Marin is feeling better but still a little dizzy from time to time after the radiation last week. She certainly is inspired to get back in to shape and it's taking a little extra effort because she hasn't had much of an appetite; we've had to really focus on getting her nutrition. It's challenging when she's on such a strict diet and she's quite weary of the limited types of food she can eat... one can only take so much fish and broccoli, but Marin keeps taking it.
Lately, as the summer days pass, we're saying so long to some important friends in our lives. Our good friends and neighbors down the street, the Gemmels, moved this week back to the Bay Area in northern California and it was bittersweet for us all. Marin had bonded with Naomi and Nancy became good friends and work-out partners with her mom Elizabeth. Michael was good pals and skating partners with her daughters Sarah and Miriam and we're all going to miss them but we're sure we'll see them down the line. Happy trails. At the same time, some of Marin's friends from the BCS team are getting ready to go off to college so she'll be missing them as well. Molly has been such a wonderful friend and they'll be getting together over the weekend before she heads off to Middlebury in Vermont. And Marin has grown close to another swimmer Ashley who'd been very kind and she's getting ready to go to Colombia next week. True, change is the only thing you can really count on in life and it's wonderful to see these friends grow and move on, but it's still hard to see them go. We're thankful for the time we've had together and look forward to seeing our good friends again sometime in the future.
Enjoy your good friends this weekend,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Tuesday, August 14, 2007 0:38 AM CDT A week has passed since Marin underwent Gamma Knife surgery and we're happy to report she seems to be reacting just fine. She suffered spells of dizziness for the first couple days, but they gradually waned and she's getting beack to a normal schedule this week, including swimming. One of the issues are the four areas on her scalp where screws were inserted for the stabalizing halo. These wounds are healing nicely and Marin was only too happy to remove the one band aid that was on her forehead all week. As always, her attitude has been great and she continues to shine right through the adversity.
It will be seve3ral weeks before we may know how this treatment will affect what we can see of the tumor, so we're still a bit anxious for now, but we have faith that this will be affective. At the same time, we're always lining up the 'what next?'. Any input you have is always appreciated.
An eventful week was marked by our 20th wedding anniversary on Wed. August 8th. We shared dinner out that evening and then truly celebrated by enjoying a wonderful gift from our good friends in Jacksonville who pitched in and bought us a dinner and overnight stay at the Seattle W Hotel. We had a great night being urbanites for the evening and the next morning as well. Thank you to the gang at WJXT, and most notably our wonderful friend Robyn, for sending us on an amazing and unforgettable night on the town and frankly, we needed it bad! And it was good!!
Enjoy each other,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Mike
Tuesday, August 7, 2007 5:39 PM CDT Please pray for Marin's healing after she underwent gamma knife surgery today at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. After lots of consultation with several doctors, we decided that now is the time to zap the tumor with the radiation. Even with the decision made, it was an anxious morning as Nancy was feeling particularly apprehensive when Marin was fitted for the stabalizing halo brace that's necessary for the proceedure. This requires the drilling of four screws into her head to completely immobilize the skull. In typical fashion, Marin handled the situation with complete grace. The radiation took less than a half hour but they spent about seven hours at the hospital altogether.
Marin was feeling fine afterword, well enough to go out for a late lunch with mom. She'll likely feel some extra fatigue increasing over the next few days but in general she'll feel pretty normal. The biggest issue is the four areas where the screws were inserted in to her head. She'll likely be feeling that pain more and more over the next couple days and she's been told she can't go swimming for a week or so.
From here, we watch and see. We have chemotherapy options available if we see that need, but it will be several weeks, if not a few months before we see what affect the radiation has and if there's a need for further treatment. We hope and pray for the best and know that Marin's spirit gives her the very best platform to beat this episode.
Thanks for enduring with us,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn, & Michael
Friday, August 3, 2007 1:37 AM CDT Good day all of Marin's faithful readers. Today was yet another emotional, decison making day. Because of the great decision, we have remained undecided as we close our day. I have talked with several docs today, all with different opinions. My conclusion, the oncology docs say to go with the drugs. The radiation docs say to go with that, and the neurosurgeons say to go with surgery. Ultimately, we have to make the decision. The odds for all of them aren't good. On the otherhand, they never have been. If anyone in this entire world can beat the odds, it's our Marin! We are leaning now with Gamma Knife first, then the avastin, CTp11 drug, then the Burzynski clinic, in that order. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. The clinical trial sounds good but no one with Marin's type of cancer has been in the trial. Actually, Marin is the only person recorded in the world with her type. She always has to stand out in the croud.
Marin's only focus is that she only wants to swim. Her 6th and 8th world ranking has motivated her so much that she feels nothing will stand in her way. Marin is living to live and swim. A lot of people with agressive cancer wake up living to be sick. In our decision process, we will greatly consider thatr Marin can live to be strong and swim.
Please pray for the miracle for the tumor to go away. Please pray for her to continue to be successful at swimming and achieve her goals. Please pray that the family will hold it together.
thank you for your prayers. Thank you for your support.
Fondly, Marin and Family Nancy, Matt, Camlyn and Michael
Wednesday, August 1, 2007 3:32 AM CDT We did receive the results of Marin's PET scan Tuesday afternoon and we're still in the decision making process. The tests show that, at least technically, there are cancer cells growing in her tumor. The positive spin as that the PET metabolism wasn't terribly 'hot', meaning this looks to be slow growing and thus we have the time to be prudent about our next move. The better news is that much of the remaining lining of what was the tumor show no signs of metabolism at all and so we can reasonably believe that it's now dead tissue. The results will be discussed by Dr. Geyer and his colleagues at the weekly tumor board meeting and we'll consult with him after that. The possibilites include minimally invasive surgery to draw a sample of the tumor for a biopsy (we want to avoid this); the gamma knife treatment (which we believe won't completely eradicate the cancer); and then the preferred chemo treatment with Avastin and CPT-11. We'll let you know how it goes after we consult with the doctors Wednesday.
We appreciate the prayers,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Mikey
Monday, July 30, 2007 0:59 AM CDT It was a whirlwind week so here's the latest on all we've been through and what we're look ahead to. We met with doctors at UW Med Center to consult about the possibility of doing gamma knife radiation, and while this remains a viable option if there is a pressing need to reduce the size of any tumor that's growing, it won't be our first course of treatment. All agree that there are other alternatives to consider first.
So on Wednesday we met with Dr. Geyer, Marin's neuro-oncologist at Children's Hospital and the meeting was encouraging in some ways we weren't expecting. Dr. Geyer continues to look at her latest MRI very closely and simply isn't positive that what we're seeing that looks like tumor flare-ups may not necessarily be more tumor. Her case of astrocytoma with ganglioglioma is very rare and this case in particular has behaved so unusual compared to his experience that Dr. Geyer just isn't thouroughly convinced what this is, so he's giving this case thorough attention. To that end, he ordered a PET scan, which Marin underwent last Thursday at UW Med center and we're waiting for the results either this Monday or Tuesday. The Pet scan is designed to measure the metabolism rate of the cells it projects, thus if the scan show areas with particularly high metabolism, or a 'hot' reading, then the doctors can be just about certain that we're dealing with cancer cells that are growing. We should know by Tuesday. We also discussed the possibility of going in for a tissue sample and having that biopsied, but none of us want to go that route id at all avoidable.
So now we're waiting on test results and we have a likely course of treatment with a drug called Avastin and CPT-11 in compbination that has shown relatively good results on brain tumors (40-50% affectiveness). We'll see and we'll keep you posted.
In the meantime, the great news is Marin continues to feel really good and on Friday she swam in the big PNS swim meet in Federal Way, WA where she took part in the 50-backstroke with able-bodied swimmers. Marin clocked in at 49.86, which was better that half a second faster than the time she logged two weeks ago at the CanAm meet in Vancouver. The time would lower her own American record, but the meet wasn't sanctioned as a disabled event, so it's unofficial, but still a great sign that she continues to drop time. She was very proud, as were coach Karen and Klaas who were there. Marin also saw her friends Molly and others from the Bellevue Club team, as well as Ariana Kukors, who's one of the top swimmers on the US National Team and who's family has been very kind to us since we moved to Washington.
After the meet Friday, we piled in the car and drove with our good friends and nighbors Tammi and Rob out to the Columbia River in eastern Washington for a weekend and camping and boating. It was a blast, as the weather was beautiful and the river was fun. We had a little adventure with a big wind storm and our tents Saturday night, but we survived and really enjoyed a great weekend. Happy Birthday Uncle Andy (7/28).
Have a good week and we'll keep you up to date,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Tuesday, July 24, 2007 9:42 AM CDT We have a big day at hand and some extra prayers today would help. We're going in to meet with Dr. Geyer, Marin's oncologist at Children's Hospital to discuss the treatment options and probably make a decision on what we'll do next. We've had an indication that the doctors here want to perform gamma knife radiation on the visible portion of the tumor but we're getting conflicting information from other doctors out there about how the ultimate affectiveness and the side affects of this proceedure and we're leaning away from it right now. We think there are some affective drug combinations that would be the better way to start fight this right now and the decision process is difficult.
Marin is not having a difficult time; she contiues to enjoy her summer and she's swimming strong. At the end of this week she's entered in a local club swim meet just to get more racing experience. And she was lifted up big time by a package she received in the mail yesterday. It was a beautiful patchwork quilt featuring the swim T-shirts of a dozen club swim teams from around Atlanta, including of course SwimAtlanta, her team at heart. It was a project organized by her friend Layne Brodie from the Dynamo Club, and came with a picture of Layne and another friend Sheila O'neil from Dynamo. The quilt was stitched together wonderfully by a mother and daughter from another club and it's clear lots of love and care went in to this project. Thank you Stingrays, Dynamo, Athens, CAD Dolphins, Chattahoochee Gold, Columbus Hurricanes, Carrolton Bluefins, Dekalb Aquatics, Greater Augusta, Troup County Sharks, and Gwinnett Aquatics. We'll include a picture of the quilt here shortly.
Have a great day and swim strong,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Mike
Thursday, July 19, 2007 11:58 PM CDT Thanks to all who've offered suggestions regarding further treatment possibilities. It's been a stressful week but we're managing it well as Marin remains upbeat. Her neuro oncologist met with a group of experts called the 'tumor board' on Wednesday and reported their opinion to us last night. There seems to be a consensus that the growth seen in her latest MRI is a problem and most likely tumor regrowth. To be certain, Marin will undergo a PET scan to better illuminate any cancerous growth and then we'll consult with Dr. Geyer next week when he gets the results. We've discussed a few possibilites already, including a possible gamma knife radiation treatment. Depending on the size of the growth and the urgency of treatment, this may be necessary. Beyond all of that, we're consulting with doctors at Duke, MD Anderson, the Block Clinic and the Burzindski Clinic, plus reading up on all the available clinical trials. We see some promise in a drug called Avastin in combination with another drug that's produced results for brain cancer patients. This course has been recommended by some of the doctors we've already spoken to but we'll wait for all the information before we proceed.
Marin doing great, again with a good attitude and focusing on her swimming. Camie's enjoying a week in New York with cousin Justin & his family and is going to see the "Today Show" Friday morning... look for a sign in the crowd that says "Hello Seattle" along with a Peach with long blonde hair.
We'll keep you posted on the latest developments. All your love and prayers are felt and we appreciate everyone sharing our burden with us.
Still swimming strong,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camie & Michael
Tuesday, July 17, 2007 0:43 AM CDT Our weekend in Vancouver was terrific altogether with Marin qualifying for the US National team in the 50-backstroke. Her swims on Sunday were on par, she won her heat in the 100-freestyle (which she swims on her back) and her 100-backstroke was solid but neither of her times were better than her qualifying times. Marin was happy with her swims and she was thrilled to have friends (Molly & Deb) there to cheer her on.
After a great getaway weekend for the whole family, Monday was back to reality and this one was hard. Marin went in for her monthly MRI and the results were alarming. There are two areas of growth around the tumor cavity that weren't there a month ago, confirming our fears from a few weeks ago. So from here, we are now looking for the next treatment possibilities and will be focused on that for the next several days (suggestions and advice are welcomed). Through the tough news, Marin is steady and strong and completely positive as she always has been. We're a little shaken, but still very strong in our faith and hopeful for her future. She'll focus on swimming and getting better and we'll focus on the medical and other components to her healing. Thanks, as always for your spiritual and prayer support, we need a big push right now.
This news arrives just as Camie is enjoying her first big trip on her own. She flew by herself from Seattle to New York today (with a long delay in Chicago) and she'll be enjoying the next ten days with our cousins Justin & Stephanie and their family in the Big Apple. We're excited for Camie and don't want to alarm her while she's on this exctiting trip.
Please pray for Marin while enjoying every moment you can this summer.
Still swimming strong,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Mike
Sunday, July 15, 2007 0:57 AM CDT It's been a fantastic weekend here in Vancouver so far. We've been having a terrific time at the CanAm swim meet and a wonderful experience in this beautiful city. We've been quite busy and have been on the go from sun-up to sundown and this is the first opportunity we've had to update Marin's webpage.
So, here's the good news: on Friday, Marin swam the 50-backstroke and lopped 3.3 seconds off her own American record, clocking in at 50.46 seconds and with this time she QUALIFIED FOR THE U.S. NATIONAL TEAM!! What a thrill for all of us and Marin was so happy to reach one of her lifelong goals. Several members of the U.S. team congratulated her and she was so proud, almost as proud as Nancy and I. We can't tell you how amazing it is to see Marin thriving the way she is after all she's been through and everything she continues to deal with. After her triumphant timing in the preliminaries, we went back to the hotel, had a nice lunch and Marin took her afternoon nap before the finals in the evening. While she slept, the rest of us went for a nice walk with the Kaplan family (also Shadow Seals swimmers) in the local park near our hotel, then it was back to the pool for the evening session where Marin swam slightly slower in the finals. She qualified seventh (first in her classification) and swam a 50.90 in the evening. Lesson learned: you have to be on top of your game morning and night.
There are at least a dozen countries represented at this meet with the Chinese most impressive so far. They brought a lot of swimmers here and many of them are world-record holders. The U.S. team has some great swimmers here too, and we watched Jessica Long lower one of her own world records (the 200-Free) Friday night. The Australian swimmers are doing great too and the Mexican team has a strong group here as well.
Saturday, Marin swam the 50-fly and the 50-free, lowering her times in both events and making the finals in the 50-fly. She dropped 8-seconds in the fly to 58.76 and 2-seconds in the freestyle to 51.86. Again, her swim in the evening wasn't quite as good as she went 59.46 in the breast. Still, very impressive altogether.
All the excitement of the competition was great, but we're having just as good a time away from the pool. Marin's friend Molly Eberhardt and her mom Deb arrived last night and we hung out with them during the meet. After the evening session we all went out to a great Japanese restaurant for dinner, including the Kaplan family, and ate like kings. When the bill arrived, we learned that some anonimous diner picked up our tab without our knowing, someone who had been sitting near us and apparently enjoyed how much fun all the children were having and that person paid our bill and left. We have no idea who it was, but we are humbled once again by the generosity of a stranger. We appreciate the kindness and only look ahead to an opportunity to pay it forward. We are blessed with amazing friendships and enjoying every minute of it.
Sunday, Marin swims the 100-back and the 100-free. We'll keep you posted.
Much love,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn, Michael, the Kaplans, Deb & Molly, Coach Kiko, the Chinese and TEAM USA!
Thursday, July 12, 2007 3:04 AM CDT Big excitement on the eve of our trip to Vancouver as Marin is feeling the butterflies of competition welling up inside. We're looking forward to a great time this weekend as Marin is swimming in the CanAm disability meet at the University of British Columbia. While she's doing all the work, the rest of the family will enjoy the ride as we're long overdue for some getaway time. Once again, we're on the receiving end of some terrific generosity as coach Karen worked some of her charm on members at the BCC who were very happy to help sponsor Marin, and our friend Tom Glascow solicited the owner of a great local swim shop 'Sylvia's SwimWear' who contributed a cool racing suit and caps for the occasion. Marin was so thrilled with the new gear and we're all so thankful for the support.
We'll drive the 3-hours north to Vancouver early tomorrow in order to get acclimated and allow Marin some time for a workout in the pool. Then we'll try to chill (in the 100-degree heat) and enjoy some relaxing time before the competition gets underway Friday. We'll keep everyone updated the best we can throughout the weekend and the link to the meet can be found on the Swim Canada web site at:
http://www.swimming.ca/swimming/index_e.aspx?DetailID=2262
Have a reat weekend everyone, enjoy the great summer weather and thanks for your prayers and support.
Love,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Mikey
Monday, July 9, 2007 10:13 AM CDT Enjoying summertime has been the focus this week as the weather has been spectacular here in the northwest. Marin remains hard at work training for her big meet in Vancouver which begins Friday at the U. of British Columbia. She's looking great in the pool and working on diving off the blocks and appears ready to have a great meet, right down to the nerves that are now setting in.
With the rest of the family going in several directions over the weekend, Marin found herself with a full Saturday to be on her own. She was happy to take care of herself and enjoy a little independence. Instead, she had a lot of attention from her friend Naomi and her mom Elizabeth (Nancy's good friend) who took Marin under their wing for the day. After spending the morning hours laying out in the sunshine, the ladies went out for lunch to a place Marin loves. Later, they went to a movie and saw the new Robin Williams flick 'License to Wed'. Thumbs up from all three ladies (although the critics didn't give it much love) Marin really liked it and had a huge smile on her face when talking about it.
Sunday she had her final workout with coach Kiko before the meet this week. She's fired up and ready to go fast. We leave for Vancouver (about a 3-hour drive) on Thursday afternoon and we'll keep you posted on how it goes. We hope you all have a great week.
Summer sunnin',
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Thursday, July 5, 2007 1:38 AM CDT Happy 4th Everyone,
It was an amazing holiday here in the northwest, where not a single cloud stained a clear blue sky from dawn to dusk. Marin began her day with a strong effort in the pool, working out with coach Karen for a couple hours in the morning and making a breakthrough on her starts. Up until now she had not been able (or willing) to take her starts off the starting block, rather standing to the side and diving in from the pool deck. But with caoch Karen's urging, Marin tried and tried, then eventually succeeded in standing on the block and making a strong dive from above. This should really help her in the upcoming CanAm meet in Vancouver and she'll be working on her dives for the next week and a half to gain her confidence. Once she was considered a truly great starter and streamliner. Now the problem is of course her balance on the block with only half her body working to stabalize her. Her right leg has a tendency to tremble uncontrollably, a condition called 'clonis' that is very difficult to deal with. Her right ankle as well has no stability so balancing in a starting position is more than a difficult chore. She did a courageous job today though and with a little more practice she'll be more confident. We can't wait to see how diving from the block might improve some of her times.
After the workout, it was all fun. We spent the day out on Lake Washington with our good friends and neighbors Rob & Tami and their boy Peyton who's Mike's age. Rob & his dad own a terrific 36-foot yacht that was more than roomy for about ten of us as we anchored off a park in Bellevue and fired up the BBQ for shishkebob's that Nancy prepared. It was a spectacular day on the water, and in the water for those of us who got wet. Then it was home close to sundown to enjoy the first ever city fireworks in our town of Sammamish. The whole town seemed to gather at the new city hall, we saw lots of friends and neighbors, and the fireworks show was absolutley first rate. Good times all around. A great Fourth of July here, and we hope you all had a good one too.
Here's to Independence,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Sunday, July 1, 2007 7:08 PM CDT Taking a little time to unwind, it's been a relaxing weekend with a purpose. Mom and Marin have the house to themselves for a couple days as Dad took Camie & Michael down to Florence, Oregon to visit their cousins at 'Camp Cavarno', the lake home of their cousin's grandparents Tony & Barb Cavarno, who've made their lakefront party space available to us whenever we've wanted to visit. For those that made the trip, the weekend is full of wild adventures and maintainance chores that makes for great bonding and terrific memories with their cousins.
At home, Mom and Marin are enjoying a little more peace without a five-year old to entertain. With some great sunshine Friday, it was a relaxing way to get the Independance Day weekend off to a good start but not at the expense of what had to be done. Working out in the pool and school work is the priority that's kept Marin & Mom at home this weekend, but the benefit of less people at home is almost a vacation in itself. We're looking forward to Marin's swim meet in Vancouver in two weeks so the focus on training is important. Plus, we can rent some movies WE want to watch (non-Disney, or family appropriate) and just be grown-up girls together.
We hope you're having as much fun as we are,
Marin & Mom, Matt, Camlyn, & Michael
Friday, June 29, 2007 0:56 AM CDT With Summer now in full-swing, the routine has changed slightly but the mission remains the same; Marin is striving to get better in every aspect of her being. Her school lessons will continue through the summer with Ashley and other helpers while her rehabilitation in the areas of speech, occupational and physical therapy are running out at the end of this month. We've simply used all the allotted hours according to our current health insurance policy, so we're doing our best to land a job with benefits. It's a tough road, and we have faith that this will lead us through to prosperity, but at the same time it's very trying and stressful as we try to help Marin be all she can be. Nevertheless, there's no putting on the brakes as far as she's concerned. She'll continue to work on her speech, OT & PT without the official supervision, but she'll need more help from Mom & Dad and she'll have to push herself more that she normally does.
Thank God she has her swimming, which has been a great source of physical and mental stimulation for Marin. She's in the throes of training hard for the upcoming meet in Vancouver, now just two weeks away. She's very inspired to swim her best and she's doing everything from working out hard to eating right in order to make a great showing. A good meet for Marin here in Vancouver could help her make the US Paralympic team and perhaps earn a spot on the squad going to Beijing next summer. What a thrill that would be! Indeed, it would be a goal fulfilled and a dream come true. And she's not leaving it to chance... Marin's working very hard for this opportunity.
We're looking forward to seeing some of our cousins this weekend and thinking of all the other relatives and friends we miss, especially this time of year.
Enjoying the sunshine and memories,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Wednesday, June 20, 2007 9:35 AM CDT Tuesday was Marin's 17th birthday. What a wonderful time it is to reflect on the blessing we've experienced. Even as we struggle in other areas of our family life, above everything we know that her wellness is the ultimate gift and we are profoundly thankful that she is enjoying each and every day, with the great hope that there are many more ahead.
For the second year in a row, a crew from Bellevue High, spearheaded by Marin's friend Molly raided the front of our home and used sidewalk chalk to decorate the street out front in a big birthday wish for Marin. It was a touching scene as Marin was so happy to see these good people out to make her feel special.
Still swimming strong, Marin enjoyed a nice birthday lunch with Mom and friends at the Bellevue Club after her mid day work out. Later in the evening, she went to the movies with Molly and a few others and exercised her new status as a 17-year old to see 'Knocked-up'. The grown-up subject matter was a bit of a concern for us, but we've seen it and have to see it was a really funny movie. Marin enjoyed it and her night out with the girls (and without the 'rents) was good for her.
Thanks to all who've posted birthday wishes to Marin here. She is so touched to hear from so many old friends and new.
Have a wonderful day,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn, & Michael
Sunday, June 17, 2007 11:32 PM CDT It's been one terrific Father's Day here as we enjoyed a truly amazing gift from our community. Today we all attended a benefit soccer game organized to help Marin. Tom Glascow is a friend of Matt's from the broadcastin world who cooked up a plan to help our family when he heard we were in need. Tom arranged for the Seattle Sounders soccer club to play a charity game and when the word spread, lots of our good neighbors and friends were eager to get involved. With friends like Val & Susan & Nancy & Heidi and many others helping to sell tickets and line up as volunteers, the event went off this afternoon bigger and better than we could have imagined. At was very humbling to see hundreds of people filling the stands at a local high school to enjoy the Father's Day game and contribute to Marin's medical fund. Everyone had a great time, the weather held up nicely, lots of people bid on auction items like autographed footballs and baseballs from Seattle pro teams and including three hats that Marin knitted herself and the entire event was a big success. Our sincere gratitude goes out to Tom & the Sounders and everyone who volunteered and attended to make this one of the most memorable Father's Day ever.
We also send our best wishes out to Matt's father 'Grumpy' who turned 75 today. Happy Birthday, Grumps!
Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camie & Michael
Thursday, June 14, 2007 9:32 AM CDT We're a little concerned after Marin's latest MRI taken yesterday before her next round of chemotherapy. For the first time in several months we didn't see noticeable improvement and the doctors who read the scan did not list it as stable. There seemed to be some extra 'glow' to the areas identified as cancerous cells. This was alarming to us, yes, but not necessarily a terrible setback. The contrast of the MRI overall seemed a little brighter than the ones we compared it to and thus this could be a matter of photo quality, but we are concerned and we'll continue to watch this closeley every four weeks. This also means this will be the final round of the clinical trial chemo that she's undergone for the past 15 months. Because there was no improvement this month, Dr. Geyer has determined that whatever affect the chemo has had is already complete. He's already allowed a 3-month extension for Marin and the diminished returns means we will look at other options for treatment going forward. We'll be studying the clinical trials going on out there and figure out if there's something that would make sense to move on to. At this time we ask for extra prayer support to keep her wellness trend on the upswing and we'll be extra diligent with the holistic medicines and her diet. Thanks for the spiritual support.
On a brighter note, we learned that the KOMO News story featuring Marin last fall actually won the national Edward R. Murrow Award for feature reporting. Eric Johnson and his crew did a superb job on the piece and have been honored with the highest award in the broadcast news business. We're very proud and thrilled for Eric, who gave this story the care and effort it deserved. Once again, for an encore, here's a link to the story:
http://www.komoradio.com/news/local/4616302.html
Also on the bright side, our cousins Dan and Leanne welcomed a new baby boy to the Morrison clan. Congratulations!
Thanks for keeping us all in your prayers,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Mikey
Monday, June 11, 2007 9:35 AM CDT Reading all the entries from good friends, neighbors, co-workers and aunts, uncles & cousins always gives us a great lift and helps to get our week off to an energetic start. It's nice to hear Megan & Justin are expecting twin girls, sorry to hear Aunt Jeannie's been ill... we hope you feel better!
Marin's swimmer's ear is still bothering her and she was feeling it pretty bad over the weekend. She did go swimming with the Shadow Seals on Sunday because she wanted to get in a good workout before dealing with chemotherapy this week. She plugged up her ears with these big wax plugs, and we suppose they work fine but she still was in pain and gutted through her workout. She's looking really good in the pool. Her turns in particular have looked really good and you can see she's pushing herself & getting better each week. We'll be taking a few days off as she deals with her chemo this week, which maybe allows her ear to heal better anyway.
Next Sunday there will be a benefit soccer game at Issaquah High School with the Seattle Sounders playing a co-ed match to raise funds for Marin. We were so humbled when Matt's friend Tom Glascow approached us about organizing this, and then all our great neighbors pitched right in to begin selling tickets and getting the word out. Val Gallagher has been a driving force and she's already sparked a bunch of sales. We're looking forward to the event on Father's Day, which by the way is Grumpy's 75th birthday. HBD Grumps!
Swimming strong,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Mike
Friday, June 8, 2007 10:15 AM CDT To catch you up on this week, we've been busy but Marin was thrown off her routine Monday when she couldn't stand the pain any more from a bad case of swimmer's ear. OUCH! We took her to the doctor who gave her a prescription and the infection is getting better but we have to stay on top of it. The ear prevented Marin from swimming two days this week, but she's back in th epool now and training hard toward the Can-Am meet coming up next month.
After beautiful weather last week we endured several crummy overcast and rainy days this week, but Friday dawned with sunshine and a return to warmer temperatures. We're looking forward to a great weekend and we're also looking ahead another week to a coll event put together by some good people in our Community. Tom Glascow is a local sports broadcaster who organized a benefit soccer game featuring the Seattle Sounders playing a co-ed game with the proceeds going to Marin's funds. This is an extremely nice gesture and we're looking forward to this event which is coming up on Sunday June 17th, Father's Day, at Issaquah High School at 4 in the afternoon. If anyone is interested in this event for Father's Day, please contact us and we'll get you tickets.
Finally, we're heavy-hearted this week as Nancy attended the funeral service for a friend Thursday. We're remembering Lisa Jones and her family this week as Lisa lost her fight with cancer this week. We'd come to know her through the Knights and Dames of Malta and she went on the trip to Lourdes with Marin & Nancy last year. Lisa was a lovely young woman in her early thirties who was always so encouraging toward Marin as she had some of the same affects and hair loss from radiation as Marin did. We're saddened by her loss and will keep her in our hearts and prayers.
Living strong,
Marin & Nancy, Matt Camie, & Mikey
Sunday, June 3, 2007 11:34 PM CDT We all enjoyed a really great weekend with the weather as good as it gets anywhere. The highlight was Saturday night's dance recital, as Camie performed with her hip-hop class. The performance overall was absolutely fabulous, with dozens of dances performed by the troup with near-professional excellence. Although Camie is in a beginners class for teens, they didn't an amazing job with difficult choreography and of course Camie stood out with her long legs and flowing blonde hair. She's really quite a good dancer and she wants to continue with the program. Marin really enjoyed seeing her little sis perform, and as I said, the entire evening was really well done.
Earlier Saturday, Dad took Camie & her friend Natalie and Mike to a kids fishing derby a little north of here. It was a true sportsman experience, getting up before the sun and gearing up for trout fishing on a lake. We shared the dock with other families taking part and had a nice three hours with our lines in the water. Camie was the only one in our party to catch anything; she hooked two decent sized trout, 1.1 lb and .6 lb. She let Mike have the little one to weigh in and they both received consolation prizes. It was amusing to witness Camie and her fish; she was so surprised by the first catch, and flustered with trying to get it in the bucket, that when she hooked the second one she exclaimed "Oh, NO...", prompting one of the parents near by to comment "that might be the first time I've ever heard someone say 'Oh no' when they actually caught a fish...!". Funny.
Sunday, we all enjoyed a day out at the Mariners game with Michael's t-ball team on Little League day. Good times and the Mariners beat the Rangers handily. Ironically, Mike's LL team is called the Rangers, so he was a little torn between which jersey to wear. He ended up going with his Mariners 'Ichiro' shirt, and we all had a nice time.
We have another big week ahead with lots on the to do list. Have a great week everybody.
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Peach & Spidey
Wednesday, May 30, 2007 0:20 AM CDT Although a little chilly, Monday was relatively nice and we thoroughly enjoyed the Memorial Day holiday with lots of happy neighbors. Our good friends Val & Rick hosted a BBQ at their home where the kids ran wild and the wine flowed freely. Marin was the center of attention after arriving fashionably late because she enjoyed a long afternoon nap. She had therapy with Jessie first thing in the morning then went to the pool with Dad and Mike to get her workout week off to a good start.
There was a little extra excitement in the morning for Nancy and her workout partner Miss Elizabeth. On their early morning bike ride, they came across a pile of bear poop on the trail. So for the remainder of the ride, Elizabeth was giving off hoots and whistles to scare off the bear if it was near. The scene was retold with a big laugh from Nancy.
Tuesday started with another strong workout scheduled in around therapy and school work. A day late, the really nice weather his today with sunshine and warm temperatures all day long, prompting Mar & Ashley to take their lessons outside, where they were lounging in their bikini's doing their 'school work'.
We're starting to get our first taste of the whole Olympic experiene as Marin is now on the list of athletes under the watchful eye of the US Anti-doping Agency. They'll be tracking her schedule and having her pee on command when they choose to test her. We had to fill out a form stating where she'll be for the next three months and she'll be at their whim whenever they want to test her. No, we haven't thought about a 'whizzinator', but we are trying to figure out if some of her chemo drugs might be a problem. We doubt it but we're looking in to it, and we'll find out.
Cami's volleyball and Mike's t-ball finish this week and there's a growing restlessness as the school year draws in to the final weeks. We're having fun and looking forward to a great summer.

Sunday, May 27, 2007 11:37 PM CDT Pleas forgive our lack of updates this week, we'll do better going forward. It's been a busy week for all of us and Marin especially. Between schoolwork, rehab and swimming she's been going full throttle. Her workouts in the pool are going really well and she's really inspired to be at her best when she swims in the Can Am meet in July.
We're enjoying the long holiday weekend with lots of family time together. We had planned to go camping, but we aborted that mission based on some weather factors (and the lack of a campsite reservation). Instead, we did a little 'suburban camping', taking the kids down to a little lake a couple miles from our house and went fishing all afternoon. What an adventure that was. We have a few poles and some basic equipment but we aren't exactly ready for the 'Bass Masters' just yet. Fortunately we met a nice family on the pier who gave us some valuable tips about what type of bait and rigging works best for this type of lake fishing, so we started getting in to it. Cami really was determined to catch a fish (we didn't, but we'll keep trying). Michael was determined to cast his line as many times as possible and he did that. Marin really enjoyed the process, althoug
Friday, May 18, 2007 12:53 AM CDT When last we left you earlier this week marin was going in for her monthly MRI and chemo treatments. The result of the MRI was pretty amazing as we continue to see a significant shrinkage of the visible cancer cells. It really is astounding to see the improvement over the past several months in each of her scans. So we're thrilled but cautious in our optimism.
There's no doubt that many factors have helped Marin reach this point, not the least of which is the continued spiritual and emotional support of so many friends around the world. Thank you all for your prayers, advice, and well wishes. We also feel strongly that Marin's macrobiotic diet, along with holistic medicines and nutritional supplements have a great deal to do with her winning the fight against her brain cancer. Of course her own positive attitude and will to take on the challenge is the foundation for all of this and we're just so happy and proud that she's getting better.
We're looking at a very bright, beautiful day here. Marin is taking the third of her five chemo treatments today and may be finished with the clinical trial after this month. Her doctor is advising we give it a rest, something we didn't do three months ago and we're glad we didn't. We'll continue to look at the possible treatments that continue to develop while watching her scans closely to determine what, if any, course of action we should pursue next. This experience has taught us so many lessons, especially that it's never time to relax or give up on the fight. So many new possibilites are coming all the time, it should give any cancer patient hope that there are remedies on the way. Don't ever overlook the natural and holistic treatments that some people swear by (and others dismiss) but the work of so many researchers and practioners of modern medicine is really making wonderful breakthroughs all the time. Marin's living proof that the spirit combined with excellent care can combine to defeat even the worst diagnosis.
Looking ahead to a wonderful weekend, celebrating Cami's birthday (belated) and Marin's teacher Ashley's birthday today. Happy Birthday to a wonderful teacher and friend.
TGIF... enjoy!

Wednesday, May 16, 2007 2:20 PM CDT Windy Wednesday greetings!
We got a hint of "normal" summer weather yesterday with the temperatures soaring into the 80's and a beautiful blue sky. It's amazing how everything seems fine when you have great weather. Actually, with Marin, Camlyn, and Michael, everything is wonderful!
Today Marin and I are at the hospital and Marin is receiving a MRI right now. After that we have an appointment with Dr. Geyer and then her chemo. This is the fourth month that they have given Marin the O6BG on the basis of "compationate use." Dr. Geyer dosen't want us to continue it anymore. Perhaps it's time to stop. I am hesistant because she is doing so well, her counts are remaining positive, and she appears everyday to be getting better. She sure is returning to that "teanage" personality.
On Sunday Matt, Michael, and Camlyn went for round 2 of Spiderman III. Marin and I went to see the movie Waitress. I thought it was adorable. Marin liked it but thought there was too much "behind the back" stuff going on. Definately worth checking out.
After that we went home and had frozen pizza for mother's day. That actually is a treat in our home since we eat healthy, all fresh everyday. Marin has found an organic, soy cheese, no sugar pizza that she likes a lot. It's made by the company Amy's. The weather on Mother's day was cold so the movies was a perfect thing for the family to do.
On Monday the sun started coming out and heading to the pool was beautiful. You can see all the mountains in the background on a clear day here and it's quite spectacular. At the pool where Marin swims, they have ski-lights over the pool. On a clear, sunny day, the sun shines down onto the water and Marin feels as if she is swimming outside in the warm sun! I watch her take frequent stops in the sun part and soak up the rays.
Marin has become a lot more serious about her swimming in the last month. Coach Karen has increased her workouts with more yardage. She loves racing, having goals to set and reach, and being in the competitive limelight again. I am so happy for her that she has realized that competing is an option for her again and that she still can do extremely well!
Michael has become quite the swimmer as well. He goes to the pool everyday with Marin and I and we play around in the pool while Marin swims her laps. Every once in a while, he goes to the end of the pool. Jumps in and swims (quite fast I must add) to the opposite side. He's pretty good at freestyle and backstroke. He's now working on doing the butterfly. Perhaps he will follow in his sister's footsteps and become a great competitive swimmer as well.
Cami hasn't been in the pool for quite some time but seems happy with her tennis and volleyball. I truely feel blessed for having three wonderful children. They are so strong, confident, compationate towards others, and happy. All I can say is that I am one of the luckiest Mom's in the world. I find myself trying to be the best Mom I can be for I have been chosen to be the mom of these three wonderful people.
I am trying to increase Marin's calorie intake while sticking to her diet. We have added daily protein shakes and switched from Rice Dream to Soy Milk for the added calories and protein. I am also trying to get her to eat more peanut butter and nuts. Any more suggestions? Remember she doesn't eat any meat, dairy, or sugar.
Thanks for the continued prayers for our family.
Hanging out in the hospital,
Marin and Mom Matt, Camlyn, and Michael say hi too!
Sunday, May 13, 2007 1:20 PM CDT Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful women out there who've always put their others first. The reward may be unto itself, but you all deserve a to be first in our lives more often than one day a year. Enjoy this special day and we're with you all in spirit, especially Gramma Sharon who celebrated a big birthday Saturday.
Of course Nancy has had an extraordinary burden over the past few years and she continues to carry this with her amazing energy and determination. Marin is thriving today because of her spirit and Nancy's relentless drive. That's not discounting all the wonderful support we've had from so many terrific people, but our Mom has been the engine that's carrying this miracle forward.
On this day, we feel a bond with all the mothers out there who have their own crosses to bear and who's children may be in crises. We've met so many good and strong people through the course who've suffered as much and more than we have with life circumstances that can't be avoided. We pray for the mothers who've lost a child and recognize their love still remains.
After church, it's on to the yard work Mom wants to complete then we'll all go to the movies later this afternoon. Enjoy your Mom today and try to make each day special for her throughout the entire year.
Happy Mother's Day,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camie & Mikey
Saturday, May 12, 2007 1:21 AM CDT So, no sooner than we mentioned watching "American Idol" and pulling for Blake did we have an "American Encounter" right here in the northwest. Blake Lewis is from nearby Bothel, Washington and this is the week on 'Idol' when they send the finalists home to see their family & friends and the community rallies. Blake was in town Friday doing a bunch of radio guest spots and he had two public performances on his schedule. Of course Nancy piled the kids in the car and took them down to see Blake perform in his hometown. It was a scene! Thousands of people crammed in to the little town square area. It was like the first 20 rows at a 'Stones concert (you know what I'm talking about). Well the crowd was pretty intense but Marin and Camie and a couple of their pals were totally game. Among the 'Blaker Girls' in the crowd, Marin and Camie got really close. Camie snapped a few photos on her cell phone and Marin reached through the wall of muscled body guards to pat Blake on the back ('atta boy!) as he walked to the stage. Big excitement for the girls, but Mikey was having a tough time being really small in a really big crowd so Mom had to haul him out on her shoulders. They found a little breathing room out toward the street where before long, a big hummer limousine pulled up to the curb. Soon the police were sectioning off the area and suddenly Mom & Mike were hanging out by Blake's Limo with the cops holding everyone else back. Sure enough, he came strolling off the stage and right to where Mikey and Mom were 'watching' his car for him. Everyone had a great time and we'll be looking for glimpses of Camie's long blonde hair on TV next week.
All of this on top of an already full day that included a full swimming workout for Marin. We've all earned the weekend. Enjoy yours!
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camlyn & Mike
Wednesday, May 9, 2007 11:50 PM CDT This week has seen Marin on full throttle. Her routine is as full as ever and now that swimming is once again a matter of getting in to competitive shape, she's always on the go. Take today for example. Up early, she first worked with her school PT Anne for an hour, and then with her occupational therapist Sue she hit the kitchen for a little baking session. The result was a batch of delicious macrobiotic coconut cookies that Marin just loves. After scarfing a couple down, it was off to the pool for a workout. Admittedly a little tired already, Marin did work hard with coach Karen and her reward was a yummy salmon sandwich and a good nap. She was awakened by Ashley later in the afternoon and worked through her school lessons into the evening. After a good dinner of fish and 'American Idol' we were all relieved to see the Blake survived this week (it was close).
Goodnight all,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camie & Mikey.
Monday, May 7, 2007 8:06 AM CDT We hope you all had a wonderful weekend knowing full well that few could top Marin's. Saturday was a big day that we'll never forget as she experienced a prom like no other. We wrote earlier about Marin being invited to the Starlight Starbright Foundation annual dance for teens who have illnesses or other medical conditions that prevent them from being involved in the mainstream school activities. The foundation organizes this event so that these youg people can enjoy a special night with a group of peers. And boy, this really was special. For starters, they offered a dress fitting where Marin and the others could go downtown to a shop and pick out a gown that was donated to the cause. Marin and Mom went in the afternoon and they picked out this beautiful strapless red dress with an open back tied together with laces. It was absolutley stunning (pictures to come) and Marin was very pleased. The foundation also offered hair and make-up services so we went to the event a couple hours early and Marin had her face and hair done by professionals who donated their time and worked on the girls at the hotel. The make-up was a little thick at first so Marin customized for herself and she asked the stylist to striaghten her hair and it looked smashing!! So feeling all beautiful, she went to the prom with her escort (Dad) and proceeded to have a wonderful time. We met lots of nice people and with a little coaxing, Marin was on the dance floor having a good time as everyone did all evening. She sat at a big table and made friends throughout the evening, and was very happy to see that one of her teammates on the Eastlake High swim team was there as a lead volunteer, indeed Leslie had organized the entire event as part of her senior class project. What a job she and all the volunteers did to make this an unforgettable night for so many young folks who all seemed to have a great time. It really was wonderful and we'll be sharing pictures with you soon.
Hope your weekend was wonderful too,
Marin & Nancy, Matt, Camie & Spidey III
Saturday, May 5, 2007 11:00 AM CDT Sorry for the long lay-off, it's been an exhausting week. Marin has been working hard in therapy and in the swimming pool. She's definitely benefitting from the more rigorous workouts with coach Karen as she has increased her stamina significantly. The other day, she swam a fast 200 yards in practice and said she felt really good and strong. Up until recently, anything beyond 75 yards would wear on her but now she's getting in to good shape and she's definitely inspired about competing again.
Friday, we took a much needed break and Mom took Marin and Mike to see the new Spiderman III movie. Mikey was so excited when he woke up Friday morning that he just couldn't be denied. Dad and Camie couldn't make it for the matinee, so they'll get a make-up date. The reviews were strong although we're warned it's a very emotional film.
Camie came home Friday with another great report card; all A's, she's such a wonderful person. She celebrated last night by having a handful of friends over for lasagna and then all going out to the junior high dance (look out world).
Tonight Marin is going to a dance of her own organized by the Starlight Foundation, a group that puts on events for sick or disabled children and teenagers. This is going to be a fancy affair for all the young people that aren't able to go to their own school prom. They help Marin with a dress, hair and make-up and try to make everyone feel special. Dad will go along as her escort and we're looking forward to a good time.
We hope you all have a good weekend too,
Marin & Mom, Matt, Camlyn & Michael
Monday, April 30, 2007 8:54 AM CDT What a great weekend as Marin made another big splash in her second disabled swim meet. This one was a smaller local event and it was held in a 25-yard pool compared to a 50-meter Olympic pool. Because the venue did not have any electronic timing pads, the times aren't official for national competition, but that doesn't mean Marin didn't swim fast! On Saturday she clocked a 44.16 seconds on the 50-yard backstroke, which would be an American record by about 17 seconds. She also looked great in the 50-free where her time of 44.97 was four seconds faster than the record, but again, not official. Her 1:39.06 in the 100-back was 29-seconds faster than the American record! I checked all these numbers against the world records and they're close, but she's a few seconds or more off on all of them. On Sunday it was more of the same as Marin's swim in the 200-back was more than a minute and a half better than the American standard for her class and her 100-free was 16-seconds faster than the national record. She also swam the 25-yard free in 21.05 seconds, which was very impressive although there's no record for this one.
Sunday her pal Molly showed up at the pool for support and it really gave Marin a lift. She tends to be nervous and reserved when she's competing but having Molly around I think really took the edge off for Marin. Coach Kiko and the officials and volunteers did a great job putting on a nice meet and it was very rewarding for Marin to have such a good weekend in the pool. We hope everyone had a good weekend too and swim strong in the week ahead.
